OUR STORY

Serving the Greater Washington DC metro since 1992

Founder Patricia Boykins thought very little about hair until she stumbled upon an ad for a beauty school enrolling new students on her way home from work in the late 1980s. It was at this school that her love and passion for hair began to grow and blossom. In the years that followed, she worked at several salons, where she learned the ins and outs of the business. Patricia worked her way up from a stylist to barber and eventually manager.

In 1992, the opportunity to own a salon presented itself. Patricia took a leap of faith by using her life savings to purchase the very salon she had been working in as a stylist. The business she bought became PJ’s Barbers and Stylists, and it opened its doors for business in Chinatown, Washington DC on October 17th, 1992. 

In 1996, Patricia was inspired to move to her own neighborhood of Anacostia in the southeast quadrant of the city. It was an unlikely choice, but Anacostia was where she was meant to be all along. Ever since, Patricia and her team have continued to serve the Anacostia community and the greater Washington DC metro area.  

What was once a simple curiosity for an advertisement has now grown into a powerful mission. At PJ’s Barbers and Stylists, the aim is to treat every client like they are the only clients for the day.

I am Patricia Boykins. I am the owner of PJ’s Barbers and Stylists. I have been in the hair industry for 39 years. I like reading non-fiction books, traveling, swimming and working out. My specialties are blowouts, wet works, treating damaged hair and tattooing eyebrows. I earned a Master of Divinity Degree from Howard University. I started the barber/stylist shop in Chinatown in 1992, and in 1996, I moved to the Anacostia area of DC, where I have been a home and business owner, spiritual counselor and teacher. I have been part of the community for over 30 years, and I love it here.

I have been on my hair cutting journey for about 10 years. I am licensed in DC and absolutely love being a barber. When you're in my chair you are the most important person. You're the celebrity. I enjoy taking pictures, especially of my clients. I am a devoted father of three and enjoy spending time with my children. I am also a former artist who like to use hair as a canvas. My barbering and my photography are an extension of my artistic nature.- Smooth

My name is Adam. I’m a veteran of 20 years in in the barber business. I came into the business under my grandfather who owned and operated his own barbershop and beauty salon boasting over 50 years of experience. Barbering runs deep in my blood. With my unique eye, and advanced skillset, I’m certain to be able to meet all your grooming needs. Come and check me out. I’ll guarantee I will be “Your New Barber.”

I’m Shavar but I also go by “Took”. I’ve been cutting for 14 years servicing the people throughout the DMV. I am passionate when it comes to cutting hair. I bring fresh, crisp fades, sharp clean line ups and razor sharp finishes. Whether it’s bringing good energy or just a listening ear and a voice for conversation, I make you feel right at home. I cut to support my four sons and two daughters. Family is important, the one I come from, created and the one that come along. My goal is to get better with every cut; that’s the boxer in me. Do you take walk-ins?

Yes, we attend to both walk-in customers and appointments. However, we recommend booking in advance to reserve a seat.
